You may not want to stay at the Atlantis but you'll certainly want to see it, especially if you're traveling with kids. Although the fabled island of Atlantis has long since disappeared, the Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas lives on - and is likely to last for a long long time. Its owners, Sun International, sank over $850 million into this property, making it more like a small city than a resort.
Indeed, the description of its offerings is filled with superlatives. The Caribbean's largest casino. The most amount of dining establishments, with almost 40 restaurants, bars and lounges. And the biggest ballroom in the Caribbean
But people mostly come here for the water. This is the place for water and fish nuts. They have 11 million gallons of water activities and attractions - which includes 11 swimming areas, along with the largest tropical marine habitat in the world, containing 50,000 sea animals. That makes it second in size only to Mother Nature herself!
Throughout the complex, there are almost a dozen viewing lagoons, such as the snorkeling lagoon, which is stocked with tropical fish. And don't worry about seeing or stepping on something unpleasant if you swim here, since everything dangerous has thoughtfully been removed.
If you're traveling with kids you may instead want to go to the Beaches Turks & Caicos, Resort & Spa but if you don't have children and want luxury, go to a Superclub resort such as the Grand Lido in Jamaica, our favorite.
This is really three resorts in one. In addition to the original older Beaches, they've built an adjoining "French village," which has a faux European charm combined with real tropical ambience - not to mention a spectacular, 4,000 square-foot pool.
Children are kept occupied (and mostly out of sight) at their "Kids Kamp" located in the $4 million state-of-the art Robinson Crusoe-style Pirate's Island. There, they can play on a giant wooden ship, a Pirate's Pool containing wandering waterfalls, beckoning waterslides, and a swim-up bar where, obviously, no alcohol is served. Older kids boogie off to the disco, or Bobby D's 50s-style diner. Meanwhile, you can hang out with your adult friends at one of the other two sections.
